“Tenders are used every day on multiple occasions. But the
helicopter is an incredible tool, you can use it for exploring onshore and scouting for new anchorages”
Exploration yacht owner
Convenient, time-saving, stylish and safe, helicopters are unbeatable when it comes to exploration, adventure and sports activities.
MASTER’s new steel superstructure is crowned by a commercially certified heli deck which allows both private and chartered helicopters to land onboard. The heli deck leads onto the bridge where guests can choose between and outside or an inside staircase to reach their accommodation on the decks below.
The helipad has a D value of 13.7 and was built to land helicopters with a maximum weight of 4.3 t which includes the EC145, Dauphin AS365, Agusta A119, Bell 429, and Bell 407, among others.
ICON Yachts contracted the renowned Aviation Inspection Body (AIB) Safeguard Helidecks to inspect and assess MASTER’s helideck. Inspections are rigorous since a heli deck must be approved both by Class and Flag State and Safeguard Helidecks’ role is to ensure that aviation onboard is conducted in the safest possible manner. Operating as consultants to the shipyard in the early design stages, they provide unique expertise in deck loading, air flow disruption and helideck location. Accordingly, MASTER’s helipad is equipped with all essential safety systems, including a concealed foam firefighting system. Master is pre-engineered to accommodate the installation of a refueling station capable of storing up to 5m³ of helicopter fuel. Although this feature is optional, the space is ready for installation.

Helicopter
capability ups the game
It saves time since guests can go from ship to shore and onwards to events, meetings or the airport without having to waste time on multiple-leg journeys. As a sightseeing and scouting tool or for heliskiing, it is second to none. And, on a more practical note, a helicopter facilitates the evacuation of sick or injured guests or crew, if needed.

The amazing multi-purpose deck
Designed for versatility, the forward section of MASTER’s top deck is known as the Multi-Purpose Deck. It is a large 118m2 /1,270 ft2 outside salon that can be set up as an open-air cinema with an impressive 4.3m x 1.85m screen. It links to the helipad via the bridge deck and (when the heli isn’t on board) creates a spectacular 327m2 /3,520 ft2 entertainment area. Stability calculations show that the deck can accommodate gatherings of up to 100 people.

A mini conversion
within a major conversion
Repurposing comes with major environmental benefits
All ERRVs are outfitted with fast, heavy-duty tenders and Ocean Ness was no exception. What is exceptional is the fact that ICON Yachts decided to keep and repurpose them and the tenders, one open and one closed, are now undergoing a mini conversion at Jachthaven Bouwmeester, a specialized tender refit yard in Holland.
This decision was driven by two factors. The first was that the tenders were superbly built and capable of operating in severe weather. It made sense to include them in the new global exploration program. Secondly, tenders of a similar size and tough specification would cost more than double the cost of the conversions. The two tenders are included in MASTER’s asking price. It seemed fitting that having served their mother ship so well since she was launched, the tenders should continue their journey together.
Incidentally, upcycling material, i.e. repurposing it in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original, is inbuilt into ICON’s environmentally sound ISO 14001 processes. It was no different in the case of the tenders.
The MP-1111 FRDC tenders were built by the Norwegian company Maritime Partner AS that has been in the work boat building business for over 30 years and is a world leading designer and supplier of fast rescue boats, patrol and daughter craft to the international maritime, military and offshore industry. Their credentials are impeccable.
ICON Yachts selected the Jachthaven shipyard for the conversion. Located in Amsterdam, Jachthaven Bouwmeester specializes in boat restoration and new builds with unique expertise in sustainable conversions.

The tenders are 11.75m (38’6”) long with a 3.50m (11’6”) beam. They were completely stripped to their bare aluminum hulls, blasted and then repainted. The superstructures were rebuilt, new electrical systems and new piping were installed. The interior was outfitted for guests including a toilet and a deck shower.
New inboard Volvo Penta D4 engines with joystick control steering were installed. The engines have a combined output of 460 hp and, since the hull design remains unchanged, the tenders are expected to maintain their original top speed of 37.5 knots.
Renamed Gurkha I and Gurkha II, the first is being repurposed as an enclosed tender, ideal for colder climates and rough weather conditions. Gurkha II is being converted into an open-style tender for use in warmer climates as a guest tender or dive-support boat.
Exceptionally robust and built for North Sea rescue and repair operations, Gurkha I and II make an invaluable overall contribution to the capacity of Project MASTER.
In addition, if required, there is enough space for a heavy-duty Milpro (up to 7m/23’) from Zodiac’s inflatable line (top speed 29 knots) to be stored in the tender garage. Ideal for Arctic pottering.

TENDER ENGINES
Volvo Penta Engines
The Volvo Penta D4 is designed for reliability, fuel efficiency and reduced maintenance costs.
The Volvo Penta engines were chosen because they are an excellent fit for the MASTER Project.
Designed and built for strength, the engines use advanced technology and materials for long-term durability and fuel efficiency.
High torque at low rpm provides fast acceleration, immediate response and good maneuverability with low noise and vibration levels.
The Glass Cockpit
Electronic Vessel Control
ICON also opted for the Volvo Penta Electronic Vessel Control which integrates the propulsion system with joystick docking and the glass cockpit.
The glass cockpit integrates all driver information in one location. They opted for the 12” multi-function widescreen displays to give a full overview and total control – making driving safer and more fun!

There’s a whole new world under the surface
MASTER is equipped for underwater exploration with a U-Boat Worx C-Researcher 3, 300. The sub can carry 2 passengers, 1 pilot and it reach a depth of 300m. can be stowed on the starboard side in place of one of the tenders and launched using the existing tender crane.
Alternatively, as an option, should an owner require two tenders on board, MASTER can be configured to carry a two-person U-Boat Worx Nemo submarine which is stowed on the port side of the main deck aft.

Good equipment is essential
Cramm is the world leader in creating tailor-made and modular yachting equipment and has a good track record with northern European and international shipyards. MASTER is equipped with the following cranes, selected as being the most appropriate for her existing tenders and sizable fleet of toys!
One Cramm portside overhead electric toy store crane, SWL 999kg.
One Cramm starboard side overhead SOLAS approved, man overboard and man riding (MOB) / SWL 1500kg.
Two Cramm man riding main tender cranes each with a SWL 8000kg or 8.8 tons.
One removable, manually operated davit with deck connection points in four (4) locations, SWL 250kg.
